Replication in most prokaryotic cells begins at a single starting point and proceeds in two directions until the entire chromosome is copied. In eukaryotic cells, replication proceeds from multiple starting points on individual chromosomes and ends when all the chromosomes are copied. The following are also marked on the illustration showing Prokaryotic DNA and Eukaryotic DNA:
- Replication fork
- New DNA
- Origin of replication
- Unreplicated DNA
