The four steps are:

1. Nerve cell produces PrP proteins.
2. Prions are misfolded PrP proteins which arise spontaneously or are introduced in food.
3. Prions cause additional PrP proteins to misfold, thereby producing more prions.
4. Eventually, so many prions accumulate that cells become damaged and cease to function.
