Description of the parts of the comet:
- Meteoroids: Most meteoroids are made of rock. Others are made of metal, or a mixture of rock and metal. Sometimes, many meteors flash across the night sky within a short span of time. This event is known as a meteor shower. A meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through the dust and debris from the tail of a comet. The majority of meteoroids are no bigger than grains of sand.
- Meteor: A meteor is the light from a meteoroid as it vaporizes in the atmosphere.
- Meteorites: Relatively few meteoroids ever make it to the surface of the Earth. Those that do, called meteorites, can have very different shapes and sizes. Some are fragments broken from a larger space object.
Bright comet: In spite of its brightness, a comet does not give off any light of its own. What seems to be light from the comet is actually a reflection of the sun’s light.
Example: Barringer Meteorite Crater, Arizona: 50,000 years ago, a meteorite 45 meters across crashed into Earth, producing this huge crater.
