1-3 Measuring Segments

Objective

To find and compare lengths of segments

A Solve It problem demonstrates measuring length.
Image Long Description

In the Solve It, you measured the length of an object indirectly.

Essential Understanding You can use number operations to find and compare the lengths of segments.

The Ruler Postulate allows you to measure lengths of segments using a given unit and to find distances between points on a number line. Consider modified eh b with left right arrow above  below. The distance between points A and B is the absolute value of the difference of their coordinates, or vertical line eh minus b vertical line .  This value is also AB, or the length of eh b bar , .

Points A and B on a line are at a and b, respectively, showing AB = |a and b|.
