Classifying Triangles

You can classify a triangle by its angles and sides.

A triangle has each angle marked congruent.

Equiangular all angles congruent

A triangle has all angles smaller than a right angle.

Acute all angles acute

A triangle has one right angle.

Right one right angle

A triangle has one angle larger than a right angle.

Obtuse one obtuse angle

A triangle has all sides marked congruent.

Equilateral all sides congruent

A triangle has two sides marked congruent.

Isosceles at least two sides congruent

A triangle has no sides marked congruent.

Scalene no sides congruent

Example

What type of triangle is shown below?

A triangle has two sides marked congruent.

At least two sides are congruent, so the triangle is isosceles. One angle is obtuse, so the triangle is obtuse. The triangle is an obtuse isosceles triangle.

Exercises

Classify each triangle by its sides and angles.

  1. A triangle has a right angle.
  2. A triangle has three angles and three sides marked congruent.
  3. A triangle has two sides marked congruent.

If possible, draw a triangle to fit each description. Mark the triangle to show known information. If you cannot draw the triangle, write not possible and explain why.

  1. acute equilateral
  2. right equilateral
  3. obtuse scalene
  4. acute isosceles
  5. right isosceles
  6. acute scalene
