Practice and Problem-Solving Exercises

A Practice

See Problem 1.

The figures in each pair are similar. Identify the corresponding sides and angles.

  1. white up pointing triangle eh b c tilde white up pointing triangle d e f

Triangle ABC is next to triangle DEF. Sides AB and BC form what appears to be a right angle in triangle ABC and sides DE and EF form what appears to be a right angle in triangle DEF.

  2. f g h i tilde k l m n

In quadrilateral FGHI side IH functions as the base appears to be the shortest side. In quadrilateral KLNM NM functions as the base and appears to be the shortest side. The angles are labeled clockwise in alphabetical order on both quadrilaterals.

The figures in each pair are similar. Find the missing length.

  1. One triangle has 2 sides that are 7.5 and 18 units long. The corresponding sides in a similar triangle are 5 and x units long.
  2. One triangle has 2 sides that are 32 and 36 units long. The corresponding sides in a similar triangle are y and 45 units long.
  3. A quadrilateral has 2 sides that are 28 and 35 units long. The corresponding sides in a similar quadrilateral are 42 and z units long.
  4. A bowl has a top that measures 60 units across and a bottom that measures 36 units across. The corresponding top and bottom on a similar bowl measure k and 60 units.

    See Problem 2.

  5. Bridges In the diagram of the park, white up pointing triangle eh d f tilde white up pointing triangle b c f .  The crosswalk at point A is about 20 yd long. A bridge across the pond will be built, from point B to point C. What will the length of the bridge be?

Points A, D, and F form 3 sides of a triangle. Points B, C, and F form three sides of a similar triangle.

See Problem 3.

The scale of a map is 1 cm : 15 km. Find the actual distance corresponding to each map distance.

  1. 2.5 cm
  2. 0.2 cm
  3. 15 cm
  4. 4.6 cm

    See Problem 4.

  5. Movies A professional model-maker is building a giant scale model of a house fly to be used in a science fiction film. An actual fly is about 0.2 in. long with a wingspan of about 0.5 in. The model fly for the movie will be 27 ft long. What will its wingspan be?
  6. Maps Abbottsville and Broken Branch are 175 mi apart. On a map, the distance between the two towns is 2.5 in. What is the scale of the map?
