9-4 Factoring to Solve Quadratic Equations

Objective

To solve quadratic equations by factoring

Solve it: Tyler says, “This problem is like the one in Lesson 8-3, but here you need to find numerical values.
Image Long Description

In the previous lesson, you solved quadratic equations eh x squared , plus b x plus c equals 0  by finding square roots. This method works if b equals 0 .

Essential Understanding You can solve some quadratic equations, including equations where b not equal to 0 comma  by using the Zero-Product Property.

The Multiplication Property of Zero states that for any real number eh comma eh middle dot 0 equals 0 .  This is equivalent to the following statement: For any real numbers a and b, if eh equals 0  or b equals 0 comma  then eh b equals 0 .  The Zero-Product Property reverses this statement.
