3 Pull It All Together

Max says, “To solve these problems you will pull together many concepts and skills that you have studied about solving inequalities.”

BIG idea Variable

You can use algebraic inequalities to represent relationships between quantities that are not equal.

Task 1

A camping supply store carries tents usually priced from $68 to $119. The store is having a sale. What is the range of possible prices you could pay for a tent?

A banner on a store Web site reads “All tents on sale: 10% to 25% off.” A “Shop Now” button is also present.

BIG idea Equivalence

You can represent an inequality using symbols in an infinite number of ways. Equivalent representations have the same solutions as the original inequality.

Task 2

For each figure, find the values of x such that the area A of the figure satisfies the given condition.

A rectangle has a length of 3 and a width of x. The area A is less than or equal to 72.

A triangle has a base that measures 20 and a height of x + 2. The area A is less than 30.

BIG Idea Solving Equations and Inequalities

You can use properties of inequality to transform an inequality into equivalent, simpler inequalities and then find solutions.

Task 3

You have a photograph 12 in. wide and 18 in. long. You surround the photograph with a mat x in. wide, as shown below. You want to make a frame for the matted photograph, but you only have an 80-in. length of wood to use for the frame. What are the dimensions of the largest frame you can make?

A photograph is 18 inches long and 12 inches wide. The mat that surrounds the photo is x inches wide on all sides.
