Percents and Percent Applications

Percent means “per hundred.” Find fraction, decimal, and percent equivalents by replacing one symbol for hundredths with another.

Example 1

Write each number as a percent.

  1. The number 0.082 has the decimal shifted 2 number values to the right to create 8.2 percent.

Move the decimal point two places to the right and write a percent sign.

  2. 3 fifths , equals , 60 over 100 , equals 60 percent

Write the fraction as hundredths. Then replace the hundredths with a percent sign.

  3. 1 , and 1 sixth , equals , 7 sixths , equals , 1.166 , 6 bar , equals , 116. , 6 bar , percent

First, use 7 divides 6 to write 1 , and 1 sixth as a decimal.

Example 2

Write each percent as a decimal.

50 percent has a decimal after the zero. The decimal point is shifted 2 number values to the left to create 0.50 or 0.5. and (1 over 2) percent equals 0.5 percent. Shift the decimal point to the left two places to create a decimal, 0.005.

Example 3

Use an equation to solve each percent problem.

  1. table with 4 rows and 1 column , row1 column 1 , cap whatis . 30 , percentof , 12 question mark , row2 column 1 , downwards arrow south west arrow south west arrow , row3 column 1 , n equals 0.3 times 12 , row4 column 1 , n equals 3.6 , end table
  2. table with 3 rows and 1 column , row1 column 1 , 18is , 0 . .3percentofwhatquestion mark , row2 column 1 , downwards arrow downwards arrow downwards arrow , row3 column 1 , table with 3 rows and 3 columns , row1 column 1 , 18 , column 2 equals , column 3 0.003 , times n , row2 column 1 , 18 over 0.003 , column 2 equals , column 3 fraction 0.003 , n , over 0.003 end fraction , row3 column 1 , 6000 , column 2 equals , column 3 n , end table , end table
  3. table with 3 rows and 1 column , row1 column 1 , cap whatpercentof . 60 , is , 9 question mark , row2 column 1 , south east arrow south west arrow downwards arrow , row3 column 1 , table with 3 rows and 3 columns , row1 column 1 , n times 60 , column 2 equals , column 3 9 , row2 column 1 , 60 n , column 2 equals , column 3 9 , row3 column 1 , n , column 2 equals , column 3 9 sixtieths , equals , 0.15 , equals 15 percent , end table , end table

Exercises

Write each decimal as a percent and each percent as a decimal.

  1. 0.46
  2. 1.506
  3. 0.007
  4. 8%
  5. 103.5%
  6. 3.3%

Write each fraction or mixed number as a percent.

  1. 1 fourth
  2. 3 eighths
  3. 2 thirds
  4. 4 ninths
  5. 1 , and 3 twentieths
  6. 1 200th

Use an equation to solve each percent problem. Round your answer to the nearest tenth, if necessary.

  1. What is 25% of 50?
  2. What percent of 58 is 37?
  3. 120% of what is 90?
  4. 8 is what percent of 40?
  5. 15 is 75% of what?
  6. 80% of 58 is what?
