THE DEMISE OF A DISEASE
In the early twentieth century, many poorly nourished children living in northern cities of the United States and Europe had very soft, weak bones, a condition called “rickets.” These children often had bowed legs, malformed wrists, and many other skeletal problems. Meanwhile, poorly nourished children living in southern cities rarely developed rickets.
During this time, rickets was a health problem that seriously affected many children living in cold climates. No one knew the cause or how to cure the disease. Some people claimed that regular doses of cod liver oil cured rickets, but many considered this folklore.
Scientists were eager to find answers. What was the connection between rickets and the northern climate? And could cod liver oil be a cure? In the chapter, look for clues that helped scientists develop ideas about the cause of rickets. Then, solve the mystery.
