FIGURE 21–14 Plasmodium Life Cycle The parasite that causes malaria, Plasmodium, requires two hosts to complete its life cycle: an Anopheles mosquito and a human.
d▸ Malaria Malaria is one of the world's most serious infectious diseases. More than 1 million people die from malaria every year, many of them children. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium, a spore-forming protist carried by the female Anopheles mosquito. The life cycle of Plasmodium is shown in Figure 21–14.
Review Give four examples of photosynthetic protists.
Predict How would ocean food chains change in the absence of photosynthetic protists?
Review Describe the ways amoebas, ciliates, and water molds obtain food.
Compare and Contrast In protist terms, how is engulfing food different from absorbing it?
Review Give two examples each of mutualism and parasitism involving protists.
Explain By what two methods do parasitic protists primarily spread disease?
Form an Opinion Why are protist-caused diseases more widespread in tropical areas of the world?
WRITE ABOUT SCIENCE
Use the library or the Internet to investigate the number of algal blooms off the California coast over the last ten years. Be sure to note the causes, the types of protists identified, and the effects on wildlife and people. Present your findings to the class as an unbiased investigative report.
